I already answer to Maddy, and Barone is a play on my rank of baroness in the SCA and my Italian heritage. When I decided I needed a pen name, Maddy Barone was an easy choice. No, actually, I’m known as “Maddy” since Maria Maddalena is quite a mouthful. See? I have to do something with that History degree! In the SCA I am known as Maria Maddalena da Monreale. I am a member of the SCA, a non-profit educational organization that studies and re-creates the renaissance and middle ages. That’s probably why I work in the financial department at Medicare. I graduated from Moorhead State University with a BA in history. After 8 years in the Guard and working crappy part time jobs, I went back to college. I fooled a couple years away in college before joining the National Guard. I never did very well in school, not because I was stupid, but because I was usually off in my own world, one populated by space pirates and warrior princesses. The only reason I survived childhood was because I had entire worlds to escape into through the school library. We moved around a bit while I was growing up and I was painfully shy, so I didn’t have a lot of friends. Photo by Brandi Spray Photography Hmmm… What to say about myself? I’m not a terribly exciting person. I was born in Milwaukee Wisconsin, USA at the tail end of the baby boom.

6/8/2023 0 Comments The Grey Album by Kevin YoungYoung moves through slave narratives and spirituals and beatniks and funk in a multifaceted yet coherent work comprising history, analysis, and theory. As intricate and ingenious as his critiques are, Young is confiding, poignant, appreciative, witty, and poetic." - Booklist (starred review) " elegant and informative study. Young reads, listens, and observes with acute, questing attention, following 'underground railroads of meaning' and tracing artistic lineages and bursts of fresh invention. Who is the liar, who the thief, who is telling whose history, and who is keeping score? Young forces us to contemplate who controls the music., Praise for The Grey Album: "In his first prose book, an expansive and radiantly interpretive exploration of 'black creativity,' proves to be an exceptionally fluent, evocative, deep-diving, and bracing critic. In his new work of literary and cultural criticism, The Grey Album: On the Blackness of Blackness, the accomplished poet Kevin Young unearths, orchestrates, improvises and imagines lies and more lies-in short, American history. In a series of themed chapters, covering Beaton's first self-portraits and earliest sitters to his time at Cambridge and as principle society photographer for Vogue and Vanity Fair, over 60 leading figures who sat for him are profiled and the dazzling parties, pageants and balls of the period are brought to life.Īmong this glittering cast are Beaton's socialite sisters Baba and Nancy Beaton, Stephen Tennant, the Mitfords, Siegfried Sassoon, Evelyn Waugh and Daphne Du Maurier. More than a photographer, Beaton became a society fixture in his own right. Beaton quickly developed a reputation for his beautiful, often striking and fantastic photographs, which culminated in his portraits of Queen Elizabeth in 1939. These 'Bright Young Things' captured the spirit of the roaring twenties and thirties as they cut a dramatic swathe through the epoch. His influence on portrait photography was profound and lives on today in the work of many contemporary photographers.īeaton used his camera, his ambition and his larger-than-life personality to mingle with a flamboyant and rebellious group of artists, writers, socialites and partygoers. The Tao Te Ching, Daodejing, Dao De Jing, or Daode jing, also simply referred to as the Lao Tzu, is a Chinese classic text.Īccording to tradition, it was written around 6th century BC by the sage Lao Tzu, a record-keeper at the Zhou dynasty court, by whose name the text is known in China. Its influence has also spread widely outside East Asia, and is among the most translated works in world literature. Many Chinese artists, including poets, painters, calligraphers, and even gardeners, have used the Daodejing as a source of inspiration. The Tao Te Ching, along with the Zhuangzi, is a fundamental text for both philosophical and religious Taoism, and strongly influenced other schools, such as Legalism, Confucianism, and Chinese Buddhism, which when first introduced into China was largely interpreted through the use of Daoist words and concepts. Maybe that last one's only an issue for old folks like me. On yet another hand (how many hands do I have? Good heavens, I've turned into an octopus!), the too-faithful reproduction of how kids speak got old in a hurry. On the other hand, the story was still pretty fun. The heart is definitely in the right place, but the message felt a bit blatant. Fourth-grade Lucy sustains a minor injury while playing dodgeball in school. The memoir then moves back in time to Grealy’s early childhood and the accident that led to the discovery of her cancer. Even from the brief anecdote, we can see clearly how ashamed Grealy is at her own disfigurement. As she works the party, we see how acutely aware Grealy is of the partygoers curious and disturbed gazes at her disfigured jaw, which she attempts to hide behind her long hair. The prologue begins several years after Grealy’s cancer treatment, with an account of an adolescent Grealy helping a local stable with a ‘pony party’ in a nearby suburb. With the exception of the prologue, the memoir employs a linear narrative, detailing Grealy’s life from early childhood into adulthood. It describes her childhood struggles with jaw cancer and the resulting disfigurement that she considers the true tragedy of her life. The agency Clare possesses in constructing her identity leads to the tragic ending of both women, for her white husband’s racism prevails and his power to dictate his wife’s identity indirectly causes her death. The second chapter focuses on Larsen’s second novel, Passing, and how the two protagonists, Irene and Clare, construct their identities in their segregated society. It concludes that Helga’s failure to achieve autonomy signifies the novel’s critique of the racism and misogyny within its contemporary society. The first chapter shows the connection among constructing racial, gender and sexual identities by paralleling Quicksand’s protagonist’s plight to define her racial identity with her simultaneous struggle to obtain sexual autonomy. It examines the textual representations of race, class, gender and sexuality and how these representations speak to the stereotypes of African American female identity prevalent in Harlem Renaissance literature and the wider literary canon. This thesis explores the constructions of African American female identity in Nella Larsen’s two novels, Quicksand and Passing. 6/6/2023 0 Comments Shiver by Maggie StiefvaterThe Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy has won more awards than we care to count and Shiver was optioned for a major motion picture (are there minor ones anymore?) by Warner Bros. These wolves have quite the pedigree too. There's no way anyone who is a wolf four months out of the year could be so prolific. Despite being able to write from the perspective of a werewolf so well, we're pretty certain Stiefvater isn't one. Its author, Maggie Stiefvater, is a nigh-unstoppable young-adult powerhouse, having also written the ongoing Raven Cycle and Books of Faerie series, and the stand-alone novel The Scorpio Races. Shiver, published in 2009, is the first book in the Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, which also includes Linger and Forever. Together, they kindle up a romance that they hope will keep them both warm, and keep Sam human and alive. In Shiver, Sam is a werewolf who changes when the temperature drops. We'll try to summarize Shiver in text form though, if only because you so don't want to hear us try to sing. If we were to summarize Shiver in musical form, a mash-up of these two songs with wolf howls added would be the best way to do it. Oops, we got a couple of classic holiday songs mixed up, but Maggie Stiefvater got werewolves mixed up in our young-adult romance, so it works. At least we've got our love to keep us warm. She s writing a whole new ending for her romance with Hunter…Įxcept this story could come true. Now she s not just imagining what might have been. But Hunter devises his own creative revenge, writing sexy stories that drive the whole class wild with curiosity and fill Erin s heart with longing. She only hopes to persuade him not to reveal her secret to everyone else. And after he reads about himself in her story, her private fantasies about him must be painfully clear. So why does he sneak into her thoughts as the hero of her latest writing assignment? Then, on the day she s sharing that assignment with her class, Hunter walks in. Now Erin has to win an internship and work late nights at a local coffee shop to make her own dreams a reality. But when she refuses to major in business and take over the farm herself someday, her grandmother gives Erin s college tuition and promised inheritance to their maddeningly handsome stable boy, Hunter Allen. Out for a night of prespring break partying, 17-year-old Meg McPherson is first arrested and then partnered with a cop as part of her punishment for trespassing, underage drinking and illegal drug use. Away from her parents who seem determined to keep her imprisoned in their dead-end lives.
